Biography

Aaron Lindh was born in northeastern Illinois (US) and grew up in rural Delavan, Wisconsin (US). Growing up, Aaron played guitar and violin and sang in various school choirs. He also participated in school and community theatre and musicals.

Aaron graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2004 with a Bachelor of Music in Composition. During his time in Madison Aaron was highly prolific. He wrote multiple pieces every semester, in a wide variety of styles for a wide variety of ensembles. Aaron found himself lost in these realms he was creating myself. His pieces were a space he could control.

When composing, there are no safe starting assumptions, no formulae. Rather, everything is chaotic and up for reconsideration. This was part of the appeal for Aaron – the uncertainty of starting a new piece of music reflected the uncertainty in his life, but unlike his life, Aaron’s music was totally under his control. Furthermore, unlike other art forms, music inherently doesn’t have to be representational. Aaron played in the abstract because formal expectations were unsafe in his life.

This all changed when Aaron moved to Montreal for a master’s program. He found himself lost, alone, without guidance, without hope. Aaron’s compositional output dwindled to nothingness. By 2007 he had effectively ceased to be a musician.

A decade later, Aaron received a diagnosis that would eventually lead to his return to music. In 2017 he was diagnosed with Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (C-PTSD). Working with a therapist, Aaron started to take tentative steps back towards a life in music.

In January 2018, Aaron started studying voice in the Bel Canto tradition. He found himself in a discipline that drew from his musical experience while separate from his composition training.

Aaron continues to study and improve in Toronto, Canada.
